A couple of things that accelerate the evolution of self-driving cars:

1) machine learning on the edge, i.e. in the car itself

2) data explosion, every Tesla deployed generates more data to learn from

3) improved algorithms: especially multi-modal neural networks will better learn to correlate sensors and actions (e.g. computer vision and structured data).
